7th Grade Reading

Here are some of the items we cover:

·          Roots, Suffixes, & Prefixes-Taught weekly throughout the year

·          Reciprocal Teaching (Predicting, Questioning, Clarifying, Summarizing)-Both instruction in identifying and metacognitively.

·          Identifying & Using Story Elements & Literary Devices (Plot, Mood, Setting, Symbolism, Personification, First & Third Person Point of View, Flashback, Foreshadowing, etc.)& Analyzing Characters

·          Reading for Explicit & Implicit Information (Nonfiction)-Topics, Main Ideas (and skimming), Supporting Details, Making Inferences, Highlighting Skills

·          Using Graphic Organizers

·          Identifying Facts & Opinions along with Propaganda Techniques (Faulty Cause-Effect, Repetition, Bandwagon, Testimony, etc.)

·          Types of Writing (Narrative, Persuasive, etc.) Author’s Purpose

·          Analyzing and Interpreting Fiction-through the use of a novel.

·          Identifying & Using Figurative Language (Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Idioms, etc.)

·          Answering the PSSA Constructed-Response Questions, Understanding the PSSA Rubric & Practicing the Written Response

·          Reading Independently – Accelerated Reader

·          Text Structures (description, cause/effect, problem/solution, sequencing)
